Nuzulul Qur’an, Al-Qur’an was Revealed during Ramadan, at the Night of Glory, Night of Blessing

Ramadan is the most noble month compare to other months and in this month Al Qur’an was sent down (Nuzulul Qur’an) for the first time.

“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.”[ (Al-Baqarah:185)

“Surely We sent it (the Qur’an) down during the Night of Power.” (Al-Qadr: 1)

“Surely We sent it down (the Quran) during a blessed night……” (Ad-Dukhan: 3)

Al-Qur'anul Kareem
Al-Qur’anul Kareem

In these 3 verses of Qur’an above, all explained when the Al-Qur’an was sent down at the first time, which was the month of Ramadan, precisely at Lailatul Qadr; (glory night). And also at night of blessing (Lailatul mubarakah). Allah did not explain which date of night exactly in the month of Ramadan. Ibn Ishak said that it was sent down at 17 Ramadan as Zaid bin Tzabit said ( Tafsir An-Nuur-TM.Hasbi ash-Shiddiqie).

Some Ulama (scholars) have difference opinions on the date of which Al-Qur’an was revealed in the month of Ramadan. Some said it was night of 7 of Ramadan, some said at the night of 17 Ramadan, others said at night of 21, also some said at night of 24 Ramadan.

From Ibn Abbas radhiyallahu ‘anhuma, he said that Al-Quran was sent down at once into the sky of world (dunya) at night of Lailatul Qadr. Then it was revealed gradually over 23 years, and then he read about the verse:

“And (it is) a Qur’an which I have divided into parts in order that you (Muhammad) may recite it to the people gradually, and I have revealed it by successive revelation.” (A-Isra: 106)

Imam An-Nasa’i also narrated with a saheeh isnaad from Ibn Abbas radhiallah ‘anhuma, he said: “…… and the Quran placed in Baitil izzah (The House of Honor or Power) from the sky, sent down to the world and then Jibril alaihi salam brought him to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).”

This revelation began with the first five verses of Surah al-‘Alaq (Iqra-96:1-5). These verses were revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him) while he was on a spiritual retreat in the cave of Hira’ near Makkah.

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

In the name of your Lord Who created.

Created man from a clot of blood.

And your Lord is the Most generous,

Who taught [man the use of] the pen,

and taught man that which he did not know.

Knowledge about the asbab al-nuzul helps us to understand the circumstances in which a particular revelation occurred, which sheds light on its implications and gives guidance to the explanation (tafsir) and application of the ayat (verse) in question for other situations.

Ever since its revelation, 1400 years ago, the Qur’an has been a book of guidance and inspiration, a reference point, and a rich source of social and moral dynamism for hundreds of millions of people throughout the world who believe it to be immutable word of Allah (Kalamullah).

Allah says in Holy Qur’an “We have, without doubt, sent down the Message (Dhikr- Qur’an) ; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption). Al-Hijr 15:9) and “It is for Us to collect it and to give you (Muhammad Shalallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) the ability to recite it (Qur’an) (Al-Qiyammat 75:17) Allah guarantees that Allah will preserve and protect this Book.

Hundreds of Millions of copies have been printed or handwritten in nearly every age and every corner of the world. Without any variant in the text.

Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter and “meem” is a letter.” So increase your recitation of the Qur’an to gain these merits, and to gain the following merit as well. (Narrated by; Tarmidzi)

Allahumma dhakkirni minhu ma nasiitu, wa ‘alimni minhu ma jahiltu, war zuqni tilaawatahu anaall-laili wa-ana’ annahaari, waj’alhu li hujjatan ya Rabbanal-alameen

O Allah! Make me remember which of it I have not been able to know; and grant me its recitation during the times of the day and night, and make it for me an evidence. O Lord of the Worlds.

O Allah bless us with the knowledge of Qur’an and help us to understand it and implement its teachings. O Allah make us among the people of Qur’an.

Allahumma Aamiin.
